THE SCIENCE OF BEARD GROWTH – THE GENETICS
As a shaved headed guy with a massive and thick beard, whose creative chemistry has brought you one of the most effective beard growth formulas (Poseidon) on the market today, I hear it all the time; “Why not use some of that stuff on your head”, or “If it works so good, then why are you bald?”
Clearly, these people have no clue how genetics work, and more to the point…have they ever given any degree of intelligent thought to the subject whatsoever, before they spoke and removed all doubt?
BEARD HAIR TYPE
I mean really, shouldn’t some of this be painfully obvious, like why doesn’t ALL androgenic hair (pubic, arm pit, body) grow at the same rate and length of androgenic facial hair in men? Beards can easily grow to a terminal length of a foot or more, while the rest of the body’s androgenic hair remains terminal at significantly short lengths: arm hair stays around 1” – 1.5”, chest – back – leg hair stays between 1” and 3” or so, arm pit hair stays terminal around 2”-3”, and pubic hair reaches terminality at approximately 3”.
Head hair, on the other hand, is entirely different than the androgenic hair in our beards, with ultimate terminality well beyond the 12” mark in most cases. Head hair is also lighter gauged and weaker than most body hair, yet still goes through the exact same anagen, catagen, exogen & telogen growing cycles as all other hair on ones body.
Yet head hair is also affected to far greater degrees by hormonal interference than androgenic hair, and depending on your particular genetics, this hormonal influence can range anywhere from non-existent to full blown interruption. Case in point, the site produced DHT buildup in certain men’s head hair follicles and sebaceous glands, that causes hair to thin, recede and even stop growing altogether.
So it’s quite fascinating to note all of these differences in human hair production, and how the same type of hair in one location grows at an entirely different rate, length, color and thickness than the same type of hair in another location.
This all leads us back to the original misunderstanding of how hair actually works. Why and where does hair grow in men versus women, how long it grows in a certain location, how thick, what color, why some stops growing permanently and other areas grow forever. These are all great questions that have to do with genetics.
At the periphery of genetic truths, are discussions about how diet and nutrition, exercise and environment, attitude and approach, as well as how certain topically applied products (organic, natural or otherwise) can either hinder or enhance hair growth, health and maintenance over time.
Sadly, this is usually where things start to come off the rails, and the place where voodoo, sham quackery and tall tales seem to reign supreme. This is the place where it’s easy to fool people, a place where emotional marketing imagery forces one to dredge up ideas of insignificance and insufficiency, save for the hope that this NEW PRODUCT holds all the keys to their happiness.
Emotion sells, hope sells, and more than we’re ever willing to admit…the “too good to be true” sales pitch sells, because damn it…what if?
FINDING YOUR CENTER
Do you ever have that feeling where you’ve seemed to find the center of yourself, where you discover you’re actually quite happy with who you are, what you are, and why you are? Not trying to go all psychotherapist on you, certainly, just asking, but I’ll circle back to this.
NO, YOU CAN’T GROW A BEARD
You see, the bombshell I need to drop on some of you is this; you MIGHT NOT be able to grow the type of beard you see in the pictures all over the web. You might not be able to do it, no matter how you alter your diet, how hard you workout, or what products you eat up or rub on your face. This is the unfortunate & cold hard truth of how powerful our genetics are. Much like I have to face the music that I’ll never again grow thick hair on my head from front to mid center crown, you may never grow a thick, long and full beard.
YES, YOU CAN GROW A BEARD
If you can grow a beard, but it’s patchy, thin and you have connection issues between your mustache and cheek or lower lip and chin, then there are indeed some products currently available that can help you. These products will isolate and make full use of the genetics already working in your favor, and magnify that genetic potential to its maximum.
If you can grow a beard and looking for beard style ideas, we have some great beard style ideas here: TOP BEARD STYLES
If you can’t seem to grow a beard at all, but have a full head of hair that can grow down to the floor…then heck…count yourself lucky and be happy!
If you can’t grow a beard, and your head hair is thinned out and almost gone, then shave it down with a razor in the shower, and liberate yourself brother! Get a little tan going, hit the gym, maybe start playing guitar, or get a motorcycle and live the free life my man! Shoot, why not shave your head, hit the gym, start playing guitar AND get a motorcycle…and you could become the biggest bad-ass you’ve ever known.
Wherever you find yourself, your genetics will ultimately have the overriding vote on what, and how much grows here or there…and for how long. Finding your center, and realizing that your genetics are what make you…you…don’t be afraid to explore all the possibilities and maximize all the potential that you have.
There are certainly worse things in life, than not being able to grow a beard!
